White Ink Layer Protocol

The white layer is critical for QR code contrast on transparent materials. Follow this technical workflow:

  • Design QR code in solid black/dark color on a white background shape (not transparent frame).
  • Create white ink layer positioned directly behind QR code elements – cover entire code area plus extend into bleed zone by 2-3mm.
  • Quiet zone must be 4 modules minimum on all sides, maintained on both color and white layers.
  • Convert all text to outlines. Verify QR remains vector (no rasterization) at export.
  • Export layered PDF (CMYK + White Ink) or provide separate files for each layer stack.

5-Point Pre-flight Checklist

  1. DPI CHECK: All raster elements ≥300 DPI (600 DPI for codes under 25mm). Vector QR – confirm no embedded raster previews.
  2. BLEED & MARGIN: 3mm bleed on all artboards. QR code edges ≥5mm from cut line. Die-cut line on separate layer.
  3. CMYK COLOR: No RGB or spot colors except 'White Ink' channel. Convert all to CMYK. Total ink coverage ≤300%.
  4. WHITE INK OPACITY: Spot channel set to 100% black in separation preview. No overprint on white layer unless specified.
  5. OUTLINES & PATHS: All fonts converted. Paths cleaned – no open contours. QR modules as vector rectangles, not strokes.

Resolution & Scan Reliability

Clear sticker resolution directly impacts QR scan success. Use minimum 300 DPI for flat graphics; 600 DPI mandatory for codes under 20mm. For vector QR path generation, ensure no rasterization during PDF export. White ink layer matches CMYK resolution to avoid moiré patterns. Export as 'Press Quality' PDF (PDF/X-4 recommended) to preserve vector integrity and white spot channel.

Test scanability at physical proof stage. Use smartphone at standard reading distance (15-30cm). Environmental factors: matte laminate reduces glare (improves scanning under direct light), but glossy finish increases durability for outdoor use. QR cut tolerance must maintain quiet zone integrity – place code center of sticker with minimum 4mm from all edges.

Engineering Note: For die-cut stickers, white layer must account for material thickness variations. When laminating clear stickers with matte or gloss finishes, add 0.5mm to white coverage to prevent halo effects around QR modules.

Proofing Protocol

Always order physical proof before production. Mount proof on actual substrate (bottle, window, box) to verify:
- White opacity (hold to light – should be fully opaque)
- QR contrast (scan under various lighting conditions)
- Adhesion to surface (check 24h after application)

File Delivery Format

Acceptable: PDF (layered), AI, EPS, or PDF/X-4. Include white layer either as spot channel or separate file. Name layers clearly: 'CMYK_Artwork' and 'White_Ink'.
