5-Point Pre-Flight Checklist
- Bleed: Confirm 0.125" (1/8 inch) bleed on all sides. Critical: Extend all background elements into bleed area.
- Resolution: Verify 300 DPI minimum at final print size for raster elements. Vector elements must remain as paths/curves.
- Color Mode: Must be CMYK, not RGB. Convert all text to outlines/curves. Spot colors for cut lines only.
- Die-Cut Layer: Ensure cut line is on separate layer, marked 100% Magenta spot color. Check minimum widths (0.5pt lines avoided).
- Safety Margin: Critical text/logos 0.125" inside cut line. For fleet graphics, maintain 0.25" clearance for curved surfaces.
Software Setup
Begin with Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW for vector artwork. For raster editing, use Photoshop at 300 DPI minimum. Ensure color mode is CMYK for print, not RGB. Convert all text to outlines or curves to avoid font substitution. Embed all images or use high-resolution linked files. For UV resistant fleet graphics, mock up the design with a clear overlaminate layer to simulate final appearance.
Workflow Checklist
- Set up document with bleed: 1/8 inch (0.125") on all sides.
- Create a cut line (die-cut line) as a separate layer, in spot color or magenta (e.g., 100% Magenta).
- Add safety margin: keep all essential text and logos at least 1/8 inch inside the cut line.
- For contour cut stickers, ensure the outer edge follows the artwork; for die-cut, the cut line is the shape.
- Check for thin elements: avoid lines thinner than 0.5pt; keep protrusions wider than 1/4 inch.
- Verify all fonts are converted to curves, and images are embedded or linked at 300 DPI.
- Export as PDF/X-1a or layered TIFF for print; always include the cut line layer clearly marked.
DPI/Resolution Guide
For small stickers (up to 4 inches), 300 DPI is mandatory. For large fleet graphics (measured in feet), 150 DPI is acceptable, but 200 DPI preferred for sharpness at viewing distance. Always design at final size; do not scale down drastically. Bitmap images must be high-res; vector elements are resolution-independent.
